Daily’s sexual assault coverage unfair
September 4, 2001
I want to address the false sexual assault allegation which has received such unfortunate treatment in the Daily. As the Daily’s article itself mentions, we don’t know the frame of mind of the accuser, why she accused or why she would put the entire campus on edge and in a state of fear?
What right does one have to insist that what she did was racist (do we need affirmative action in false accusations as well?), cowardly, selfish, heinous and bigoted, when in fact you know nothing of the all-critical “why.”
I ask in what manner was the entire campus put into a state of fear as a result of this evil accusation. Unfortunately, but truthfully, most people frankly didn’t seem to care. Perhaps the worst part of this was how worried some were about the money wasted on investigating this case and how it might affect future attendance at Iowa State. I further question the implication that this person might have damaged the seriousness with which future rape reports are taken.
It’s quite clear why this person’s name isn’t being openly distributed. What sort of harassment would they then endure? This is by no means a “To Kill A Mockingbird” and is an extremely sensitive issue which none of you have any right to be labeling as “sick and twisted.”
I would like to point out the courage and strength that it must have taken this person to go through with this, for whatever reason, and even more commend her for the courage and strength to be honest that it never happened.
I highly doubt this was her idea of a “funny joke” or an attempt to destroy the tight-knit racial bonding one finds here at Iowa State. I don’t feel any charges or punishments whatsoever should be applied. Perhaps a little sympathy is in order instead. Perhaps Student Counseling is a bit more appropriate than the courts.
