GSB conducts lighting survey

Student leaders and public safety officials conducted a campus-wide survey Sunday night to identify poorly lit areas at Iowa State.
The survey is part of the student government’s comprehensive effort to increase safety on campus.
“Safety is an important issue to this department,” said Jerry Stewart, interim director for DPS. “Periodically walking the sidewalks and streets gives us a chance to access light levels and foliage.”
The beginning of the school year is the best time to conduct the survey, because the foliage is at its full growth, he said.
GSB President Andy Tofilon said he hopes the campus lighting survey will help identify areas that are a public safety concern.
The areas around the design building and behind Durham Center, for example, are poorly lit and have shrubbery where perpetrators can hide.
“[We did this to] better understand exactly what we need to do for faculty, staff and students to feel safe on campus,” Tofilon said.
