Credibility will come from good grammar
August 29, 2001
In response to Andrea Hauser’s column on Monday (“More Iowa State students need to learn to trust what they read in the Daily”), I would like to suggest more thorough editing as one way to increase the Daily’s credibility.
Wednesday’s headline “Athletes [sic] use of supplements increases” is a very good example. The proper use of apostrophes may be a detail that many people ignore in their day-to-day writing, but such simple mistakes certainly do not encourage the trust you seek. Unfortunately, these mechanical and grammatical errors are common in the Daily.
Correct usage helps to lend an air of authority to your writing, and you’ll probably make an English 104 Teaching Assistant happy if you prove that you learned something in his or her class.
