RAGBRAI runs through Saturday
The Iowa roads are currently playing host to the largest and oldest touring bicycle ride in the world.
The 29th annual RAGBRAI celebration started Sunday and will be running through Saturday.
RAGBRAI is an annual seven-day bicycle ride across Iowa that attracts participants from all 50 states as well as many foreign countries.
In the 29-year history of the event, the bike ride has covered 13,125 miles and has involved approximately 200,000 riders.
This year’s route covers 471 miles starting near Sioux City and ending in Muscatine.
Eight Iowa communities along the route serve as stops for the riders for overnight stays.
The ride will reach the Ames area Thursday when it makes its way through Madrid and Slater.
Women golfers place in tourney
Mary Anne Locher of Mount Vernon shot a final round of 72 to win the Iowa Women’s Golf Association Championship over the weekend.
Two ISU golfers, Leanne Owens of Creston and Sarah Gilbert of Ankeny, finished in the fourth and fifth places.
Owens finished with a total round score of 222 (72, 76, 74), eight shots behind the winner.
Gilbert finished six shots behind Owens with a 228 (77, 76, 75).
Both golfers are members of the ISU women’s golf team.
Ankeny holds disc golf tourney
Over 90 disc golfers showed up over the weekend to compete in the 9th Annual Ankeny Summerfest All Amateur Disc Golf Tournament.
The divisions ranged from seven-year-olds to seventy-year-olds.
The tournament was held at Heritage park in Ankeny in conjunction with the Summerfest activities. Ankeny Leisure and Ankeny Disc Golf sponsored the tournament.
Saturday’s actions featured 30 youth and novice competitors while Sunday brought over 60 Amateurs, Advanced and Master disc golfers to compete.
Sam Thompson of Knoxville won the Masters Division with a six-over-par 96.
Lance Lemke of Oskaloosa took first place in the field of 30 in the Amateur division with a three-under-par 87.
Winning the Advanced Division was Scott Olberding of Ankeny who shot a 8-under-par 82 to came out on top of the 19 other competitors.
