Incoming student in fatal car accident

An incoming freshman from Boone died Sunday due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Josh Dakin, 18, was a 2001 graduate of Boone High School and was planning to attend Iowa State in the fall. Dakin would have been a freshman in business.

Dakin was the son of Steven and Dorothy Dakin.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, FFA and the Boone High School Spotlight staff. He was the Toreador mascot at Boone High School. He enjoyed building toy model trucks, trailers, semis and farm equipment. In his spare time, he loved camping, boating, skiing, rock climbing and spending time with friends and family.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone. Interment will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Josh William Dakin FFA Memorial Fund which is being established.

Work zone speed limits lowered to 20 mph

Grand Avenue (U.S. Highway 69) will be closed between Lincoln Way and Fifth Street beginning on Monday for approximately 30 days. The road is being closed for street widening at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Lincoln Way.

Local traffic should use Sixth Street, Elwood Drive, Hazel Avenue, Clark Avenue, Kellogg Avenue and Duff Avenue. U.S. Highway 69 traffic will be detoured around the construction on Duff Avenue and 13th Street.

Speed limits within construction zones on Lincoln Way and Grand Avenue have been reduced to 20 mph. These limits are only effective in areas of active construction.

Museum celebrates 25th Anniversary

This Fourth of July marked the 25th Anniversary of the Farm House Museum.

There will be an open house on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The open house will include refreshments, music, tours and an opportunity to experience what Iowa State was like in its early years.
