July 9, 2001
The practices of the Chinese meditation Falun Dafa has been practiced at Iowa State for two years.
Margaret Jiang, president of Falun Dafa at Iowa State, said the organization has been at Iowa State since 1998.
She said there are three principles practitioners live by – Zhen, which means truthfulness; Shan, which means benevolence; and Ren, which means forbearance.
“The Falun Dafa is a meditation and exercise from China that was introduced to the public in 1992 and is practiced today worldwide,”said Lauren Chen, a Falun Dafa volunteer.
Chen said Falun Dafa consists of five exercises; the first four deal with movement and the last is similar to Yoga or Tai Chi meditation.
“The goal is for people who practice the Falun Dafa [to] reach enlightenment,” Chen said.
Jiang said the practice of Falun Dafa is from China and is going on worldwide.
“There are many books and video tapes that can help people learn the Falun Dafa,” Jiang said.
Jiang said there were about seven or eight people from Iowa State practicing Falun Dafa but some members have graduated and there are now about four people.
Jiang said there are free instructions on the east side of the Campanile Monday through Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.
