Budget cuts too deep

The Board of Regents has approved finalized budgets for Iowa universities, and the ISU campus will be feeling the effects.

Faced with a dwindling budget, it is understood that cuts needed to be made somewhere.

That being said, the finalized budget for Iowa State raises concerns as to whether the quality of education on campus will suffer as a result, something that should never be compromised because of a lack of money.

Every facet of the university will be touched by the cuts; some areas more than others.

One area hit hard is the College of Design, where 15 courses will be eliminated, and three more will merge together.

The decision to scale back in the design college will greatly affect the instructional quality those students came here to receive.

The College of Agriculture will lose nine courses, and almost every college will be forced to have classes with more and more students, something that hinders the educational process.

And, despite those computer fees we all pay every semester, Durham will close at midnight. This has horrible ramifications for students pulling late-nighters without a computer of their own.

Students come to ISU because of its reputation as a fantastic academic university. These cuts push the university a step in the wrong direction.

While these cuts were an effort to avoid raising tuition, hindering the education quality for students isn’t the answer.

Sometimes paying a little extra for a great education is better than hurting the learning process.
