Gay scholarships beneficial
June 25, 2001
Millions of dollars are available to help fund the costs of a college education. Countless scholarships are available for those willing to search.
The Matthew Shepard Scholarships are just one example of people putting their money to a charitable and admirable cause. They help openly gay and lesbian high school students by paying their tuition, books and fees for up to four years at a public Iowa university.
The scholarships are funded through a grant given by the Rich Eychaner Charitable Foundation. There is no federal aid involved; the scholarships are made possible by the acts of private groups such as the foundation and other sponsors, such as the First Friday Breakfast Club and the Lambda Beta Nu Breakfast Club.
The recipients of the awards have taken their personal struggles with sexuality and transformed into positive actions which battle stereotypes, discrimination and bigotry. Their rewards are justly earned.
All high school students should be aware of the support available to them – hundreds of organizations across the country put forth efforts to aid students in funding their college educations.
The scholarships and their sponsors should be applauded for their part in helping high school students who have proved themselves academically and by taking part in improving their community.
