Ferguson receives Academic All-American honor

ISU softball player, Kristin Ferguson, was named to the 2001 third team Verizon Academic All-America team.

Ferguson, a pitcher from Barnum, Minn. recorded a 2.87 ERA and a 3-1 this past season for the Cyclones.

The Academic All-American holds a 3.99 grade point average in mathematics.

Welle picked for Big 12 all-star team

ISU women’s basketball player Angie Welle has been selected for the Big 12 Conference all-star basketball team.

The team will play games in Austria and Germany beginning in August.

Welle joins 11 other Big 12 players on the team.

Each of the Big 12 teams had one player named to the squad, with Colorado having two.

Athletes receive scholar distinction

Black Issues in Higher Education magazine has named three Cyclones 2001 Arthur Ashe Scholars.

ISU softball player Kimi Yoshizawa and swimmers Carmella Nogar and Mike Jimenez were each named Ashe Scholars by the group.

To receive the award, recipients must demonstrate outstanding athletic ability, community activism and have a minimum GPA of 3.2.

Yoshizawa received third team distinction while Nogar and Jimenez were both named to the magazine’s second team.

Football game to be shown on ABC

The football game between Iowa State and Iowa will be telecast on ABC regional television coverage.

The game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 15 at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.

Iowa State appeared eight times on network television last season and finished the season with a 9-3 record.

Iowa State currently holds a three game winning streak over the Hawkeyes.

Broadcast regions for the game have yet to be determined.

Stacy Frese named Evansville assistant

Former ISU women’s basketball standout Stacy Frese has been named the new assistant coach at the University of Evansville.

Frese starred for the Cyclones earning All-American honors and numerous other honors before going on to try her hand at a career in the WNBA.

She was cut late last month by the WNBA’s Utah Starzz and will now be working under Evansville Head Coach Tricia Cullop.
