Former Cyclone signs with CFL

Former ISU football player, Troy Davis, has signed a Canadian Football League contract with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Davis starred at Iowa State in the late 90s and finished as the Heisman Trophy runner-up in his junior year.

He was also a Heisman Trophy finalist during his sophomore year with the Cyclones while establishing NCAA single-season sophomore records with 2,010 yards on the ground and 2,466 all-purpose yards.

After forgoing his final year of eligibility to enter the NFL Draft, Davis was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the third round of the draft.

In his last season at Iowa State, Davis led the nation in both rushing and all-purpose yards while earning All-American and All-Big 12 Conference honors.

Davis spent three seasons with the Saints totaling 446 yards on the ground, 237 yards as a result of pass receptions and 194 yards on 11 kickoff returns before signing with the Tiger-Cats.

Smith to join basketball team

The ISU women’s basketball team has added another member.

Waterloo native Nina Smith has committed to the Cyclones after spending two years at Wisconsin.

Smith was also considering other in-state schools such as Iowa and Northern Iowa but decided on Iowa State.

The 6-foot-4 center averaged nearly 12 points and 6 rebounds a game last season while at Wisconsin.

She’ll have to sit out a year because of transfer eligibility rules but will be eligible the following season.

Leaders commits to ISU football

The ISU football team has already received a commitment for the 2002 season.

Nick Leaders, Omaha, Neb., led Millard West High School to a 12-1 record last season recording 80 tackles as a defensive lineman.

The 6-foot-2, 250 pound Leaders will be a senior next fall at Millard West.

Leaders has family ties to Iowa State. His brother Andy is already a part of Cyclone football and his dad, Mike, was a standout in the late 70s.

Iowa State close to adding game

The Iowa State men’s basketball team is getting closer to adding one more game for next season.

If finalized, the plan would have Iowa State traveling to Boston College in December for a game against the Golden Eagles with BC coming to Ames for a game the following season.

Both games would be shown on the ESPN network.

As of Wednesday night, the deal had not yet been finalized.
