I want my Internet cafe
June 25, 2001
Only single students are served by the Department of Residence
Nine percent of students have children according to the Story County Community Assessment prepared by ISU.
These students who have families wanting to live on campus have fewer options.
No family housing has been built or remodeled on campus in the last twenty-three years. Some current buildings have lead paint and asbestos floor tiles.
Pammel Court was torn down a few years back and no plans have been made to replace these family housing units.
Hawthorn Court, Buchanan Hall, Wilson Hall, and Wallace Hall will make up the older student communities according to Randy Alexander, Director of Housing.
These units and the Department of Residence’s Master Plan do not create any housing for student families of any age.
The current family housing, Schilletter and University Villages, does not have an Internet cafe, convenience store, small fitness center, dining areas that can be closed off for meetings and a main dining area with a two-way fireplace and patio like Hawthorn Court.
While the number of non-traditional students rises across the country, Iowa State’s share declines.
Lack of affordable housing is a major contributor to this phenomenon.
