Time to conserve
June 13, 2001
Facing budget cuts and high energy costs, the university is undertaking conservation efforts that will save money and maintain the current tuition.
Temperatures will be set at 78 F during the summer and 68 F during the winter in all university buildings, with the exception of those that are temperature sensitive.
The university is taking extra steps in educating the public by providing a Web site about conserving energy.
The decision to take part in conservation is a wise one. The university is setting a good example for others to follow. Conservation is something that should always be done, regardless of funding cutbacks. It not only helps the environment, but it also helps prevent further energy crises from occurring.
Since Iowa State is funded through the state government, by taxpayers of Iowa, it should be run as cost effectively as possible. The energy cutbacks are projected to save a much needed $1.5 million by next year.
Informing the public, cutting unnecessary spending and helping the environment should be goals for the university at all times.
