Track teams take home eighth, ninth at Big 12 Championship
May 21, 2001
The Iowa State women tracksters completed their season this past weekend at the Big 12 Championships, where they placed eighth.
The Cyclones finished the tournament with a total score of 53 points for the four-day event.
The Cyclones saw several participants receive multiple honors over the weekend, especially in the field events.
Junior Lisa Griebel led the Cyclones with two top-five finishes, after winning her fifth conference shot put title, and ending up fourth in the hammer throw.
Her shot put effort of 16.55 meters automatically qualified her for the national championships.
Junior Barbara Szlendakova completed her championship run with two top-three performances.
Her second place showing in the heptathlon included an overall score of 5,727 points, the second best total in the nation this year with the best score coming from the first place competitor in the competition.
Szlendakova set a provisional mark in the long jump, where she placed third with a jump of 6.28 meters.
Freshman Susan Sherman also scored points for the cardinal and gold.
Sherman’s efforts came in the discus and the hammer throw, where she placed fifth and eighth respectively.
Gina Curtis rounded out scoring in the field events in her specialty, the high jump.
Her jump of 1.76 meters was good enough for fifth place.
Lenka Kalabova had the best finish of any of the Cyclone runners, placing third in the 800-meter run.
Ola Adetiba and Aurelia Trywianska both set provisional times when they finished eighth in their events, the 200 meters and the 100-meter high hurdles.
Adetiba, Trywianska, Szlendakova, and Sheba Clarke made up the 400-meter relay team that placed fifth after completing their race in 44.75 seconds, another provisional mark.
With the completion of the meet, many Cyclones will stop competing. However, there are some that will go on to the NCAAs.
Currently Szlendakova, Griebel, and Curtis are in the top 17 athletes that the championships will automatically take for the heptathlon, shot put, and high jump, respectively.
Adetiba, Trywianska, and the 400-meter relay team are also eligible for the meet by making the provisional times at some point this season.
The NCAA championships will take place next weekend, at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. This allows select Cyclones the chance to compete one more time this season.
