Summer brings changes to ISU9

If you turn to ISU9 on channel 9 and your favorite episode of “Dawson’s Creek” is on, don’t get too excited. ISU9 has simply moved to channel 4 and is now called ISU4.

KPWB, the new WB station in Des Moines, contacted Iowa State University and ISU9 in March about a possible move to channel 9 in Ames, according to ISU9’s Web site.

KPWB has been assigned to channel 9 in Des Moines by AT&T Broadband. As a result KPWB attempted to be put on channel 9 in as many cable systems in the area as possible.

KPWB negotiated a deal with both the management of ISU9 and Iowa State University, which owns the rights to channel 9. They came to an agreement permitting KPWB to move to channel 9. WGN moved from channel 4 to channel 49, allowing Iowa State Student Television to have channel 4.

Jennifer Spencer, an alumna in journalism and mass communication and Spanish, was the general manager of ISU9 at the time of negotiations with KPWB.

Spencer says that the move from channel 9 to channel 4 doesn’t hurt Iowa State student television.

“It’s proven that lower channels in television are always better,” she says.

The current general manager of ISU4, Dustin McDonough, senior in journalism and mass communication, adds, “one way to get students to notice us is to change channels.”

In exchange for the use of channel 9, KPWB will air ISU4 promotions and programs. This exchange will be beneficial to ISU4 since KPWB gives “a lot of free publicity that we would never have received otherwise,” says Spencer.

KPWB will also “help promote ISU4 in the fall to let students know we moved and to let them know what we offer to them,” McDonough says.

Helping usher in the new channel at ISU4 this summer will be new episodes of shows like “Ames Music Live” and the premier “Random Lobotomy.”

There was a demand to create a show like “Ames Music Live” because “there is a problem in Ames with not enough venues for local bands to play,” says “Ames Music Live” Producer Aaron Fister, a senior in management information systems, says.

” `Ames Music Live’ is another spot for local bands to play,” he adds.

New episodes of “Ames Music Live” start today. Viewers can look forward to seeing local acts The Canadian Wheat Lords and Scalpel on the first summer show. Other bands slated for summer performances are Blank Skeme and Mechanistry. Check out the Web site for more information at http://www.amesmusiclive.com.

Cody Jans, a senior in journalism and mass communication, will also be producing a new show this summer called “Random Lobotomy.” Jans appeared last semester in the sketch comedy “Oxymorons.” “Random Lobotomy” will be a combination of ideas from “Oxymorons” and another popular student-produced show, “1800 Seconds.”

Jans will be also attempt to film at least three other shows this summer.

ISU4 is also in the final stages of production on a full length movie called “Escape Velocity,” which will be released in the fall.
