A strong pitching game from sophomore hurler Jen Bice propelled the ISU softball team to a 2-1 win over Drake Tuesday afternoon.
Bice gave up one run on three hits while striking out 15 en route to the complete game and her fifth win of the season.
The win upped Iowa State’s record to 10-16 overall while Drake fell to 8-18-1 on the season.
Iowa State got on the board first in the top of the third inning on a Rainey Eanes RBI single.
Catcher Mindy Ogan led off the inning for the Cyclones with a single to left center and advanced to second base off a ground out by centerfielder Adi Blackmon. Raines singled to left center which scored Ogan to give Iowa State a 1-0 lead.
Iowa State got on the board again in the top of the sixth inning.
Erica Martinet led off the inning with a single down the right field line to bring up Lauren Cathy. Cathy advanced pinch runner Ashley Core to second on a sacrifice bunt. Core advanced to third on a Laura Browning ground out and later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0 in the Cyclone’s favor.
Drake added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning off a Katie Shaman solo homerun, but it wasn’t enough as Iowa State won 2-1.
Martinez had a big day for the Cyclones offensively, going 2 for 3 at the plate. Eanes also came through for the Cyclones, going 1 for 2 for the day with one RBI. Browning, Ogan and Kimi Yoshizawa each contributed a hit in the win.
The Cyclones were back in action yesterday when they traveled to Columbia, Mo. for a double header with the Missouri Tigers.
Iowa State and Missouri split in two earlier matchups this season at the Missouri Round Robin with the Cyclones, winning the first game 6-4 and the Tigers taking the second game 6-5.
