Definitely a real sport

Clint Albertson, after reading your April 3 letter, “America’s pastime cut, but fake sports remain,” regarding the baseball and swimming athletics cuts, we would like to cordially invite you to a Cyclone Volleyball practice.

This will give you the opportunity to view the second most popular female sport in the country.

Volleyball is second nationally in Division I participation only to women’s basketball.

It was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a student at Springfield College in Holyaoke, Mass.

The first official intercollegiate match was played in 1897 at the University of Wisconsin.

The NCAA added volleyball to its championship schedule in 1970.

Volleyball was first played as an Olympic sport in 1964, the first team sport for women.

It has become a popular and well-respected competitive sport worldwide.

Our heart goes out to the baseball and men’s swimming programs.

However, this unfortunate situation does not give reason to criticize the validity of the remaining intercollegiate sports at Iowa State.
