Tinsley earns Cyclones’ MVP at annual banquet

ISU senior point guard Jamaal Tinsley was named the Cyclones’ Most Valuable Player at the annual team banquet Saturday.
Tinsley led the Cyclones in scoring, 14.3 ppg; assists, 187; steals, 79; and blocked shots, 19.
He was also named the top offensive player on the 25-6 Cyclone team that won the regular season Big 12 Conference title before losing to Hampton in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Tinsley and the other seniors, Paul Shirley, Martin Rancik, Kantrail Horton and Richard Evans, were honored at the banquet.
Shirley was recognized as the team’s best rebounder and also was awarded the Louis Menze Award for outstanding achievement from a senior.
Shirley averaged a team-high 6.9 rebounds per game and scored an even 10 points. He started all 31 games for Iowa State.
Rancik was named the Most Improved on the team.
He earned third-team All-Big 12 honors this year after averaging 13.2 ppg.
Rancik finished his career at Iowa State with 980 points. He ranks 22 on the all-time charts.
Horton was honored as the top defender. He was also a second-team All-Big 12 pick this year. He and Tinsley finished their careers with a 57-11 record as Cyclones over a two-year span.
Evans was given the Brian Pearson Inspiration Award for providing a spark off of the bench.
Evans saw action in all 31 of the Cyclones’ games, averaging 3.0 ppg and pulling down 3.4 rebounds per contest.
