SUB announces new directors

All but one of the new Student Union Board directors’ positions have been filled.

“Out of 11 positions to fill, we only filled 10,” said David Carnes, SUB president. “We’re still looking for a public relations director.”

Lisa Kratz, assistant director of programming services, said board members are still in the process of interviewing for the two executive positions – president and vice president.

The new directors are Victor Roman, Films; John Sheriff, Net; Carrie Scott, Fine Arts; Laura Hatfield, Forms; Squire Boone, M-Shop; Devna Popejoy, Multi-Cultural; Marcus Johnson, Performing Arts; Sonyl Nagale, Media; Ellie Nelson, Varieties; and Mia Visser, Daytime Programming.

Criteria for the director positions were considered by those conducting interviews.

Carnes, junior in elementary education, said the applicant should have had experience.

“The person also needs to be comfortable working with a large group, with the SUB board, and want to help and be of service to other students,” she said.

The applicant had to be a full-time student at Iowa State next year and have an interest in the area he or she applied for, Kratz said.

“The change or improvement of the programming in an area depends on who gets the position,” she said.

Kratz said the candidate who receives the position will be influential in what happens for the programming in that area.

Applicants were not interviewed by just one person, Carnes said.

“The President of the SUB – last year’s president- and most importantly, the person who was in the position that the applicant applied for are the people that interview the candidates,” he said.

Kratz said the number of applicants this year are consistent with the number of applicants in the past. People can also reapply, but only two did this year, Carnes said.

He said the directors’ jobs are basically the same, but there are some variances due to the area the director works in.

“The basic jobs directors have are to come to weekly SUB board meetings, to discuss policies and things to be done, to oversee reservations for student office spaces, and to take care of the display cases,” Carnes said. “We do basic overall training and budget and advertising training. Becoming a director is basically just a matter of getting used to everything we do and getting used to all of the codifications.”
