Ain’t life a drag?

Jennifer Hensley

Although drag queens may not be well known around Iowa State, they have somewhat of a history here. Tomorrow the tradition continues with The Sissy and Sassy Show at 9 p.m. at the Maintenance Shop.

A show titled Spawn of the Drag featured drag queens in the M-Shop for six years, ending in 1997. The Sissy and Sassy Show follows the week of LGBT Awareness Days, which ended April 1.

Eric Yarwood, M-Shop coordinator, said that the Spawn of the Drag shows always drew a good crowd that had a good time.

Sissy and Sassy will perform various diva classics including songs by Bette Midler, Tina Turner and Janet Jackson. Newer pop artists won’t be left out, as a fair share of Fiona Apple, Geri Halliwell and, of course, Britney Spears will be dished up along with the classics.

Fun, fun and a little more fun are the goals of the show.

“I will sit on someone’s lap and lip sing to Britney Spears to make someone smile,” said Bryan Allen, show coordinator and “Sissy.”

Sissy planned on doing the show solo until Jeremy Hayes, junior in management information studies, gave in to the people who suggested he try drag.

Sissy invited him to join the show and suddenly Sissy had a partner in crime – Sassy.

Sassy isn’t a cheap girl. For her debut Hayes has bought her three pairs of heals, dresses, necklesses, a belt, various accessories, make-up and, to hold all her new make-up, a Caboodle – personalized name plate included.

Sassy now has five outfits, although Hayes isn’t sure which ones she will wear yet.

Sassy has also been preparing for her big night by learning to walk and dance in heels, which has turned out to be more of a challenge that Hayes had expected.

Hayes promises an energetic, interactive show featuring a prerecorded video of Sissy and Sassy, a light show, great music, choreographed dancing and five door prizes of $20 gift certificates to Lucullan’s Restaurant.

Three backup dancers will accompany Sissy and Sassy on stage – a first for the Alliance drag shows.

“It’s hard to advertise a drag show to a large audience because so many people don’t know what it is,” Hayes said. “You have to have been to a drag show to understand a drag show.”

Allen and Hayes said that audience interaction is vital part of everyone at the show having a good time.

Sissy is known to bring audience members on stage for birthday lap dances and other fun activities, which are likely to be a part of tomorrow’s show.

“Expect a lot of fun. Expect to have a drag queen in your lap,” Allen said. “All in all, expect to have a good time.”
