Focus on unity, not winning

Joseph F. Doolittle

In Andy Klobnock’s April 26 letter “Daily excludes greeks,” Mr. Klobnock criticizes the Daily’s greek coverage of Veishea, citing that there was no mention of “who won.”

First off, Mr. Klobnock, for most of the 26,000-plus students at Iowa State, Veishea is not a competition, but rather, a celebration of our unity. By focusing on who had the best float in the parade, you fail to foster that unity, thus enlarging the gap between greek and non-greek students.

Granted, the floats are an important part of Veishea and should get some recognition, but by letting the Daily know your thoughts in such an uncouth manner, you reflect poorly on the greek system as a whole.

Historically, greeks have tried to shed the immature image stereotypically given them and prove to the public that they are mature, professional students, but by telling the Daily that they should “ball up and give thanks where it is due,” you completely undermine the image which greeks try so hard to convey.

Perhaps next time you write a letter to criticize the Daily’s coverage and promote your fraternity’s success, you’ll want to remember that the bitterness in your words reflects on your character, your house and the greek system as a whole.
