Ag college will sponsor barbecue
April 16, 2001
Veishea week continues today as College of Agriculture students, faculty and staff enjoy a free barbecue lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of Curtiss Hall. The event will be at the Farm Bureau Pavilion in Kildee Hall, in case of rain.
Sigma Alpha, an organization promoting women in agriculture, is sponsoring the luncheon, which includes pork, hamburgers, ice cream, chips and drinks.
Alicia Martin, freshman in animal science, said she has gained a lot of valuable experience working with donors and her fellow committee members.
“I’ve never really done anything like this,” said Martin, Sigma Alpha Veishea committee member. “It’s cool to see what it takes to get everything done. Also by doing this, I’ve become close with my other committee members and have learned more about them.”
Michelle Flander, another Sigma Alpha Veishea committee member, said it had been a challenge to get as much of the food donated as possible.
“We tried to get everything donated, but that’s not always the case,” said Flander, freshman in agricultural business. “I had to try and convince them that this is for a good cause.”
While it took some talking, Flander, Martin and other committee members were able to get donations from Wells Blue Bunny, McDonald’s, Arby’s, Old Home Breads and the Story County Pork Producers.
Dana Morgan, Agriculture College representative for Veishea, said the Sigma Alpha barbecue has become a tradition of the Veishea celebrations.
“I think the main thing is that the College of Agriculture is very active in whatever event might be going on,” said Morgan, senior in agricultural studies.
