The ISU women’s golf team placed two golfers in the top 10 this past week as the team finished second at the Fighting Camel Invite in Buies Creek, N.C.
The Cyclones shot 637 over the two-round tournament, which gave them their fourth top-two finish of the year.
Campbell University completed the two-day event with the best team score of 619. The host school led the Cardinal and Gold by fifteen strokes after day one and expanded its advantage by shooting the second-lowest round of the second day. Charleston Southern finished third with a total score of 630.
Leading the Cyclones was senior Heather Elenbaas, who placed eighth with a score of 157. Right on Elenbaas’ heels was teammate Laura Wells, who shot 158 to finish in ninth place.
Cathy Ennis also had a top-20 finish, shooting the best second round of all the ‘Clones to tally a score of 162.
Noel Jacobusse completed the tourney in a tie for 21st, ending the competition at 164. Claire Stephanson finished her first competitive rounds of the spring season with a 168, good for a tie of 30th place.
Campbell was led by Laura Torrisi, who fired a 149 to win the Invite’s individual title. Following her was Patricia Martinson from Charleston Southern, who leapt over several players in the final round to finish at 151. Jessica Lewis of James Madison tied for third with Campbell’s Josefina Vsandizaga at 154.
For Elenbaas, this tournament marked her first top 10 finish of the year.
“It felt good to lead the team and have a good tournament for myself,” she said. “This past tournament gave us a lot of opportunity to see what we needed to work on. It’s just going to build our confidence.”
The Cyclones finished the tournament without freshman Lisa Meshke, who withdrew from the event after shooting on day one. Meshke has been experiencing constant back problems since November.
“Coach [Manning] said she’s never seen her in so much pain,” Elenbaas said. “In the best interest, it’s what she needed to do.”
Meshke described her injury as a herniated disk in the lower portion of her back, between the L4 and L5 invertebrae. She said that while withdrawing from the competition was disappointing, her health is more important. Right now her status is listed as day-to-day.
The ISU squad will continue its trek towards the postseason competing in its last event before hosting the Big 12 Championships later this month.
The Cyclones travel cross-state to Iowa City to participate in the Hawkeye Classic April 14 and 15.
