Bono named top wrestling assistant
April 25, 2001
The ISU wrestling team has replaced one former All-American with another at the No. 1 assistant job.
Former Cyclone wrestler Chris Bono, a three time All-American for the Cyclones, was announced to take on the head assistant job by head coach Bobby Douglas.
Bono will replace Thom Ortiz, who was named the head coach at Arizona State last week.
“Chris has a lot of knowledge and experience to share. I am very confident he will do a great job as our top assistant,” Douglas said in a press release.
Bono had a stellar Cyclone career. He ranks third on the all-time victory list for his career and has 130 total wins.
Bono wrestled from 1993-97 under Douglas.
Bono won the NCAA national championship in his junior season. At 150 pounds, he compiled a 37-4 record and won the final Big 8 Tournament championship. He helped the Cyclones take second place as a team in the national championships as well.
As a senior he was named the outstanding wrestler at the inaugural Big 12 championship meet. He placed second at the NCAA meet.
