ISU triumphs over Minnesota

The two errors that Minnesota committed against Iowa State Wednesday proved to be more costly than what is indicated by the score.

The Cyclones beat the Golden Gophers, 5-1, at Cap Timm Field.

The first two runs for the Cyclones broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning, which like Tuesday’s 17-1 thrashing of Northern Iowa, were scored off of errors by short-stop Scott Welch and second baseman Luke Appert.

Michael Wilcox and Adam Christ reached home on those errors.

Brandon Cashman, who led the offense with a 3 for 4 performance, hit his second home run of the season in the fifth inning, one day after he belted a three-run home run against Northern Iowa in the fourth inning, his first of the year.

“I’ve just been keeping up what I’ve been doing the whole year, swinging hard and doing what the coach has been telling me,” Cashman said.

T.J. Bohn hit his fourth home run of the year to lead off the seventh inning.

“We’ve always had good games with Minnesota. We’ve got some good hitting, got some clutch hits,” ISU head coach Lyle Smith said. “We got some solid pitching from our guys.”

Smith is impressed with Cashman’s current streak.

“He’s on a roll right now. Sometimes when you get in that zone, the ball looks like a beach ball up there, and when you are struggling, it looks like a marble,” Smith said. “We need more balance in our lineup to be an offensively better team.”

Spencer Allen drove in the final run of the fourth inning against Minnesota (23-15), allowing Wilcox to score an unearned run.

Joe Urban went 2 for 4 in the game.

Aaron Paterson (1-0) took the win on the mound for the Cyclones. Chad Drexler took the loss and fell to 0-4. The ISU pitching staff struck out 11 Golden Gopher batters.

Iowa State (15-19-1) returns to Big 12 action and travels to Missouri this weekend for a three-game series with the Tigers in Columbia.
