Men’s golf battles weather
April 16, 2001
For the third time this semester, the ISU men’s golf team had to deal with treacherous weather conditions during the third round of a tournament. For the second time this season, that final round was canceled, leaving the Cyclones in fifth place with a two-round score of 571.
Due to the shortening of the event, the University of Arkansas-Little Rock won the Branson Creek Invitational with a total of 557. Big 12 schools Kansas State and Nebraska completed the top three. The Wildcats finished a stroke behind the champs and two ahead of the Cornhuskers for second position.
Sophomore Matt Gatchel tied the best round ever by a Cyclone golfer by shooting 66 over the first 18 holes. The score helped him tie for seventh place after the second round. Kevin Oswald and Phil Slovitt moved into the top twenty with matching two-round totals of 142.
Josh Clay shot a second round 71 to finish with a 149, which put him in a tie for 39th. Jamie Faidley completed the tournament at 152 to place 49th in the field.
Arkansas-Little Rock swept the team and individual titles when Daniel Fox received medalist honors for his two-round 131. Seth Porter helped Nebraska’s cause by finishing in the runner-up position at 135.
