Spring Convocation will recognize faculty, staff
April 15, 2001
The many achievements and hard work of ISU faculty and staff will be honored today during the Spring Convocation and Awards Ceremony.
Charles Dobbs, executive assistant to ISU Interim President Richard Seagrave, said it is a good opportunity for the university to recognize outstanding accomplishments of faculty and staff.
The ceremony will be held at 3:15 p.m. today in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.
“This is a very nice ceremony to recognize our best who have performed above and beyond the task of fulfilling the three-fold mission of teaching/learning, research and outreach at this university,” he said.
Dobbs said it is important to recognize outstanding work of faculty and staff on campus because it sets a higher standard for the school.
“In my opinion, the higher the expectations, the better the all-around performance,” he said. “The development of this pattern allows for an outstanding environment to be involved with on both ends and this ceremony allows us to set great expectations.”
There are many awards given out at the ceremony, covering the areas of teaching, research, service and extension, Dobbs said.
Cornelia Flora, professor of sociology and director of the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development, will receive the Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agriculture Award at the ceremony.
“I think it is an incredibly wonderful thing, being honored with an award like this,” she said.
Flora said she felt particularly good about receiving this award because the support of her department has been outstanding.
The Clarence Hartley Covault Distinguished Professor of Veterinary Medicine Award will go to Norman Cheville, interim dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
The award means a lot and compliments all the work he has done throughout his career, Cheville said.
“I enjoy teaching a lot and I think working your hardest is part of being a good university citizen,” he said. “This is a first-rate award and I am extremely pleased to receive it.”
