The ISU softball team earned its 13th win of the season Tuesday afternoon with a 1-0 defeat of Drake at the Southwest Athletic Complex.

Pitching dominated the contest with both teams combining for only six hits on the day.

The win upped the Cyclones’ record to 13-24 overall while Drake dropped to 22-27 on the season.

Head coach Ruth Crowe said that she was happy to get the win but still thought the Cyclones could have played better.

“We didn’t show up really at the plate to the degree that we needed to,” Crowe said.

“Drake made like four really good plays, the pitcher snagged a couple of line drives and the shortstop made a couple plays,” she said, “but throughout our lineup we needed to be better.”

The only scoring of the game took place in the bottom of the first inning.

Freshman Julia Lindsey led off the inning with an infield single, and advanced to second when center fielder Adi Blackmon layed down a perfect sacrifice bunt in front of homeplate. Lindsey stole third and scored on a RBI single by Lauren Cathey to make the score, 1-0.

The RBI by Cathey was her 14th of the season.

Jen Bice was impressive on the mound for the Cyclones, pitching the complete game shutout and allowing three hits while striking out 11.

“Jen threw a really good game for us, and it was enough,” Crowe said. “Sometimes it works that way. It’s still a win, so I guess we’ll take it.”

Lindsey, Cathey and Mindy Ogan provided the offense for the Cyclones each contributing one hit in the win.

Three seniors have used up their eligibility for the Cyclones following this season.

Sarah Kinney, Kimi Yoshizawa and Kristin Ferguson all went out with a win in their last home game as Cyclones.

Crowe said that these seniors have been an asset to the program, and she wishes them luck.

“They’ve meant a lot to the program,” Crowe said.

“They were my first recruiting class, and at the time, we needed to sign enthusiastic, good kids, and we thought that we were able to do that. They’ve meant a lot for us as far what they’ve been able to do for us and what they’ve been able to help bring in.”

This was Iowa State’s second win this season vs. Drake with the first one coming April 3. The Cyclones took that game 2-1.

The Cyclones return to action Saturday and Sunday when they travel to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.
