Helping students is Cameron’s goal

Three semesters of work for the Agriculture Study Abroad Office has landed Kelli Cameron the honorable award of ISU 2001 Student Employee of the Year.

“It is an honor to receive this award because I’m helping other students find experiences that will affect their lives,” said Cameron, senior in agricultural education.

Shelley Taylor, director of Agriculture Study Abroad, nominated Cameron for the award.

“Each semester, Kelli has continued to impress me with her creativity, commitment and dependability,” Taylor said. “She has a great understanding of the bigger picture of what we are doing, and therefore, completes not only what she is asked to do, but additional work that needs to be done to meet the larger goals.”

As program assistant, Cameron said she provides assistance to students interested in studying abroad, develops advertising displays to promote studying abroad and created a photo database with hundreds of photos and slides from faculty and student participants.

Cameron helps students identify what they want out of an international experience, then helps them narrow their options to a few programs that better meet their needs, Taylor said.

“Kelli’s professionalism, organization, attention to detail and positive attitude impacts those around her,” she said.

Besides her work as program assistant, Cameron is involved in other organizations around campus. She is secretary of public relations for the World Association of Agricultural Councils Conference, held at Iowa State March 29 to 31. She also is agricultural education club treasurer and president of Sigma Alpha.

“Her contributions to the professional agriculture sorority, Sigma Alpha, set the tone for this organization,” said Marjorie Faust, Sigma Alpha adviser and associate professor of animal science.

There were 49 nominations for the award, which came from the office of financial aid. Cameron will receive the award at the Student Affairs Spring Divisional meeting April 11 in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.

“Kelli is the kind of employee that makes it possible for me to utilize students as the resources they can be,” Taylor said.
