Not a real sport? See for yourself

Mike Wessel

In response to Clint Albertsen’s April 3 letter, “America’s pastime cut but fake sports remain”: First off, I realize you’re a freshman, but as a political science major you better work on your debating skills.

I’m sure many people were moved by your strong supporting statement, “We all know volleyball isn’t a sport.” That clearly has made me think twice as to whether I support Title IX and the recent changes in our Athletic Department.

Second, if you truly believe that statement, I invite you to visit the next practice for the ISU Men’s Volleyball Club.

On Tuesday and Thursday nights we’ll be in Room 175, the northeast gym, of the Forker Building from about 9 p.m. until 11 p.m.

We have about 20 guys on our first and second teams getting ready to compete in the NIRSA Collegiate Volleyball Sports Club Championships next week in Kansas City.

At last year’s Nationals in Reno, NV, our 1st team placed 5th out of 60 Division 1 schools.

There are more than 5,000 students involved in collegiate club volleyball and about 2,000 students will be competing in our nationals next week. Our second and third teams are also preparing for the USA Volleyball Iowa Regionals this weekend at Drake.

Our club is one of the largest clubs on campus in terms of travel, revenues, involvement and success.

Our first team has been regular season conference champs two of the last three years, had seven all-conference players in the last three years and ranked in the top 25 nationwide in each of the last four seasons.

If you want to know more about our SPORT and teams, please visit http://www.scc.iastate.edu/mv-ball, or come by the gym sometime.
