America’s pastime cut but fake sports remain

Clint Albertsen

As I walked out of Ross Hall yesterday afternoon, my friend called my attention to the cover of the Ames Tribune.

It read, “ISU hacks baseball, swimming.”

I was deeply disturbed by this occurrence.

After I witnessed the Cyclone baseball team take two out of three games from a premier program in Oklahoma State, the team now learns that their program is in lame duck status.

Call me a traditionalist, but I believe that it is a shame for a school in this great country of ours to have to cut America’s pastime because of Title IX.

I mean, come on, look at the other sports the athletic department is retaining.

Volleyball.

We all know volleyball isn’t a sport, it’s something you do at a picnic in between the gunny-sack race and the horseshoe tournament.

(“Hey Dad, want to throw another burger on for me? This volleyball business is making me hungry.”)

It is a crime that baseball, which has been a social institution in this country for over 100 years, can be shoved aside for the status quo.
