ISU baseball players face tough decisions
April 3, 2001
Monday’s announcement by ISU athletics director Bruce Van De Velde, regarding ISU baseball and men’s swimming programs, has prompted many of the 68 athletes to hunt for another program.
“I love baseball so much,” sophomore pitcher Lincoln Mincks said. “I just value [it] so much.”
Mincks, said he will not leave his beloved sport.
“I’m not going to drop baseball just because Iowa State did,” Mincks said. “Iowa State is a great institution, [but] there are schools that have as much.”
Sophomore pitcher Alan Bomer, who is also planning to leave Iowa State for another program, said most of the baseball team has a passion for the game, which is driving most of the team to transfer.
“We all love baseball,” Bomer said. “If they have any eligibility left, they’ll want to transfer.”
The Athletic Department has said it will help athletes find another program if they wish to find one.
“I think it’s their duty,” Mincks said.
Rob McGinty, junior on the swimming team, said he is not sure if he can transfer, so he may have to miss out on his last year of eligibility.
“It will come down to the technicality of credits,” McGinty said. “I love swimming too. It’s always been a part of my life. I’m kind of confused on what I want to do.”
McGinty can remember when he came to watch his older brother, Mitchell, swim on the team when he was still in high school, and that influenced his decision to come to Iowa State.
“My brother was here, and [his presence] was a big part of it,” he said. “I never look back regretting [this] decision at all.”
