`Reparations’ ad not offensive – Cerra’s cartoon was
April 15, 2001
Carmen Cerra, the Daily’s extremist cartoonist, has once again filled his role at the Daily by providing readers with cartoons that are either tasteless, disgusting or clich‚.
Guess which category his cartoon has fallen into last week?
Mr. Cerra, in his April 12 cartoon, labels anyone who is against paying reparations for slavery a Ku Klux Klan member or at the very least a white supremacist.
I find Mr. Cerra’s cartoon tasteless and offensive (as I find most of his work, actually.)
Mr. Horowitz makes several good points in his “Top Ten Reasons Why Reparations for Slavery is a Bad Idea – And Racist Too.”
I read Mr. Horowitz’s advertisement very carefully, looking for any offensive statement, and I didn’t find anything that any sane person wouldn’t describe as a reasonable and sensible argument.
Some people may disagree with Mr. Horowitz’s views, but labeling him a white supremacist is a disgusting misuse of Mr. Cerra’s position as the sole cartoonist on the Iowa State Daily staff.
