Calef wrong, motive already punished
April 26, 2001
I could point out every single problem with Zach’s line of argumentation in his April 25 column, but I shall content myself to point out only his major flaw – Our laws ALREADY classify crimes based on motive.
To argue that it is impossible to prove someone’s intent in a criminal trial is at best ignorant, at worst deliberate disinformation.
Tell me, Zach, what’s the difference between first-degree murder and manslaughter? Intent.
How do we determine intent? In the trial, just like we determine guilt and innocence.
This is one instance that I’d prefer Zach be more like President Bush – Bush says that he’s a uniter, not a divider.
Zach’s columns would be so much better if Zach would stop blaming all of society’s ills on the liberals.
