ISU baseball drops three over weekend
April 9, 2001
Big innings hurt Iowa State as it lost all three games of a weekend series with Texas Tech.
The Cyclones lost two games in a Saturday doubleheader by scores of 12-2 and 9-3.
They went on to lose the closing game Sunday, 5-2, at Dan Law Field in Lubbock, Texas.
A seven-run seventh inning doomed the Cyclones in the first game Saturday after having been down by just three runs.
The rampage included a three-run home run by Gera Alvarez. After the 12th run was scored, the game ended due to the 10-run rule.
Nick Blankenship was also a significant contributor to the rally, going 3 for 4 in the game.
The problems began Saturday when Iowa State blew a 2-0 lead as the Red Raiders’ Tony Arnerich belted a two-run homer to tie the game.
Alan Bomer took the loss on the mound, falling to 3-4, and allowed nine of Texas Tech’s 15 hits.
He also allowed six Red Raider runs. Brandon Roberson improved to 7-3 for the Red Raiders, holding the Cyclones’ offense to six hits.
Iowa State’s Rob Conway went 2 for 3 in the loss.
Texas Tech went out to a quick 4-0 lead after three innings in the second game, including three runs in the second inning.
The Cyclones cut the lead in half in the fourth inning when Brandon Cashman and Ryan Wickham hit RBI singles, but the Red Raiders answered in the fifth inning with four runs and one more insurance run in the sixth inning to essentially put Iowa State away.
Lincoln Mincks (2-2) had a tough day on the mound, hitting eight runs on eight hits. Chris Phillips (9-2) picked up the Red Raider win.
Blankenship went crazy on the bat Sunday, belting a three-run home run to left field in the first to conquer a 1-0 Iowa State lead and then corralled one more home run to that same area of the field.
Iowa State took the lead early when Texas Tech’s (25-14, 10-8) Cory Metzler threw two straight wild pitches to score Adam Christ, who went 3 for 4.
Conway also had a RBI in the fifth that brought Christ home.
Iowa State (10-18-1, 4-7) is back at Cap Timm Field Tuesday when it hosts Grand View at 3 p.m.
