Softball swept by OU
April 1, 2001
The ISU softball team was unable to match the impressive hitting of Oklahoma Sunday and fell 11-2 and 13-3 in the first two home games of the season.
Game one saw the Sooners get out fast scoring the first run of the game on two hits in the top of the first inning. The two teams traded scoreless innings till the top of the fifth when Oklahoma went on a tear, scoring eight runs on eight hits.
Iowa State closed the gap to 9-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Morgan LeCluyse RBI single, and a Lauren Cathey sacrifice fly to center field.
But it was not enough as Oklahoma added two more runs in the seventh inning for the 11-2 win.
“I thought we played OK,” head coach Ruth Crowe said. “Obviously, when you play a team like that, OK isn’t good enough.”
Sophomore Jen Bice took the loss for the Cyclones pitching 5 2/3 innings before being relieved by senior Kristin Ferguson.
The Cyclones collected six hits on the game, singles by Lauren Cathey, Julia Lindsey, Mindy Ogan, Morgan LeCluyse and Laura Browning, and a double by leadoff hitter Rainey Eanes.
The second game was similar to the first and saw the Sooners jump out to an early 7-0 lead. The Cyclones countered the attack with two runs of their own on a single by Cathey in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Oklahoma added one run in both the fifth and the sixth innings, and then four more runs in the seventh to pad their lead.
Iowa State was able to get some production in the sixth inning, but the Sooners went on for the 13-3 win.
Erica Martinez took the loss for the Cyclones allowing 10 runs on 12 hits.
Iowa State produced 10 hits on the game with Adi Blackmon, Kimi Yoshizawa and Martinez each contributing two.
Oklahoma looked impressive on the day hammering out four homeruns including two grandslams.
Head coach Ruth Crowe was quick to give credit to Oklahoma for their impressive hitting display, but also mentioned that the bat the Sooners used is going to be investigated.
“It’s not an Iowa State claim,” she said. “It’s a call to question across the country.”
Crowe said that other college teams currently using the bat, which is given to a select group of college programs by Worth, is currently not for sale.
“Even if I could use it, I would not use it,” she said. “It’s unsafe.”
Evidence of the danger of the bat showed itself in game one when ISU pitcher Jen Bice was hit in the hand by a line drive from one of the Oklahoma hitters. Bice stayed in the game, but looked rattled as Oklahoma pulled away in the game.
“We’re lucky she took it off her hand instead of between the eyes,” Crowe said.
Despite the losses, Crowe said that there were some positive things that happened.
“We’re a very young team, so I feel like we showed a lot of really good things today,” she said. “Last year, we wouldn’t of scored probably. [This year] I think we can compete with the other Big 12 teams.”
The losses drops Iowa State’s season record to 9-16 and 0-2 while the win solidifies Oklahoma’s record at 29-7 and 4-2 in the Big 12.
Next action for the Cyclones will be Wednesday when they travel to Drake.
