Animal torture also American pastime

Travis Putrah

I am writing in response to the April 24 column, “Bullfighting: Animal torture as national pastime,” written by Amie Van Overmeer.

After reading her column, I found it very hypocritical for Van Overmeer to focus her criticism only on the Spanish culture for their treatment of animals.

I found it surprising that she left out the fact that our American culture allows animals to be tortured as a national pastime – we hunt animals.

We also allow bullfighting. Yes, the unique art of bullfighting is practiced in California and other western states.

It seems to me that we, as Americans, find it very easy to criticize other cultures, while at the same time, the problem exists within our own culture.

Instead of criticizing others, maybe we should focus on our own faults, try to fix them and then lead by example.
