Pancake breakfast will draw hundreds
April 17, 2001
Cakes will be flying at the annual Veishea pancake breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
The breakfast will be in a tent south of the Campanile, and organizers hope to serve more than 800 people this year.
Pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee are included in the breakfast and will be served by two people from Chris Cakes and 15 people from the Veishea special events committee.
The breakfast is served in a very unique way, said Luke Foster, special events co-chair.
“Chris Cakes makes the pancakes and then flips the cakes up at you, and you catch them with your plate,” said Chris Lursen, Veishea coordinator.
The breakfast is an attraction many people enjoy, said Kathy Craig, Veishea general co-chair.
“It’s really a lot of fun,” said Craig, senior in Spanish. “It’s different and people love it. One time the pancake even landed on my head.”
Veishea officials hope to serve a record crowd this year.
“The largest crowd we’ve ever had was probably about 720 people,” Lursen said.
The pancake breakfast is funded by Veishea, Craig said.
“The pancake breakfast has basically been a Veishea tradition since the parade started,” said Foster, senior in biology.
Lursen, junior in agricultural systems technology, said a lot of families participate because it’s right before the parade.
Proceeds from the breakfast go to the Veishea Leadership Scholarship for Outstanding High School Seniors.
The six scholars are awarded $500 each, Foster said.
Tickets are $4 each and are available at the door.
