Students will be able to broaden their horizons and learn more about racism and ethnic diversity during a lecture tonight.Joe Feagin, author and editor of 30 books about racism and sexism, will be speaking about “Racism and the Coming White Minority” at 8 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.”We are very excited to have Feagin in the line-up as a speaker,” said Pat Miller, coordinator for the Committee on Lectures.Feagin, member of the Department of Sociology at the University of Florida, has served as president of the American Sociological Association and received his doctorate from Harvard University, according to the ISU Lectures Program Web site. After collaborating with Debra Van Ausdale on “How Children Learn Race and Racism,” Feagin’s work is pertinent to society today, said Ed Munoz, assistant professor of sociology and the institute for social and behavioral research.”Their ethnographic work in child day care centers strongly suggests that society must begin to focus efforts of reducing racial and ethnic discrimination at this tender young age,” he said.Lois Wright Morton, assistant professor of sociology, said awareness about ethnic diversity and racism are big issues lately.”As we welcome more people to Iowa and think about the different types of populations, it’s about the understanding that we all come from different places,” she said. “This is more than just an Iowa State University issue.”
