Swim team, GSB need to work with Athletic Department
March 30, 2001
In response to the Daily’s March 29 article, “ISU men’s swimming may be eliminated,” I think it is important to note that the men’s swimming and diving team is not fighting any decision made by the ISU Athletic Department.
I am a former swimmer and current volunteer assistant coach, and I feel strongly that the strength of the program here at Iowa State, athletically and academically, is an asset to the university and the community.
It was brought to our attention on Tuesday that one of the solutions for a possible Athletic Department budget shortfall would be to cut some non-revenue sports.
By going to the Government of the Student Body, the swimming community here at Iowa State was looking for support from the student body and any alternatives to cutting the swimming and diving program here.
We want to work WITH the Athletic Department, proactively, to try to keep all current sports at Iowa State.
