Maple Hall holds clothing drive

Maple Hall students are trying to clothe the needy.

The Maple Hall programming board has been holding a clothing drive at the Maple-Willow-Larch commons during the dinner hour, which is around 4:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., through Friday, said Chad Steinkamp, member of the Maple Hall programming board.

“We wanted to do this in a way so that the people who receive the clothing wouldn’t have to pay for it,” said Rebecca Hinrichsen, junior in child and family services and an adviser for community service projects organized by the board.

Donated clothing should be clean and in fair shape, said Steinkamp, freshman in agricultural business. “And no underwear or socks.”

Hinrichsen said Maple residents signed up to sit at the clothing drive booth to fulfill their community service requirements.

Gus Aramayo, drive volunteer, said two people brought in five bags on Tuesday to help in the drive effort.

“People are gradually bringing it in, and lots of [resident assistants] are bringing clothing,” Hinrichsen said.

Steinkamp also said many people have contributed to the effort.

“Quite a few people have brought clothing in,” he said. “We’re doing pretty well.”

Hinrichsen said clothing will go to the Emergency Residence Project, headed by Vic Moss, director of the Ames homeless shelters. Clothing will also be sent to Bethesda Lutheran Church, 1517 Northwestern Ave.

Steinkamp said there isn’t a specific goal set for the amount of clothing, but the board hopes to receive as much as possible.

“We want to get students to give away some of their old clothes that they may not need to people who need clothes,” he said.

The board also recognizes the importance of the clothing drive in benefiting Ames citizens.

“It’s for a good cause,” said Aramayo, sophomore in mechanical engineering.
