Cyclones clinch share of Big 12 title
March 1, 2001
Iowa State [24-4, 12-3] bounced back from its worst loss of the season in resounding fashion Wednesday night by downing Texas Tech [9-17, 3-12] 80-63. Martin Rancik scored 22 points and grabbed four rebounds to lead a balanced ISU attack that saw four players score in double figures. The win clinched Iowa State a share of the Big 12 title and kept them one game ahead of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech in the Big 12 standings. Wednesday’s win also marked only the second time in school history that Iowa State has won or clinched a share of the conference title in back-to-back seasons. The last time that feat was accomplished was in the 1943-44 and 1944-45 seasons.Jamaal Tinsley scored 10 points, handed out 12 assists and pulled down four rebounds. Tyray Pearson put in 12 points and Jake Sullivan added 11 points for the victors.Texas Tech bigmen Cliff Owens and Andy Ellis scored 16 and 11 points respectively in a losing effort. The Red Raiders stuck with the Cyclones for much of the first half behind point guard Jamal Brown’s 12 points on 5-6 shooting. Texas Tech actually led 27-24 with 5:47 on a Brown steal and subsequent layin. The first half featured five ties, 12 lead changes and a dominant offensive performance from Rancik in the post. Rancik dropped in 16 first-half points and led Iowa State to a 44-34 lead heading into the locker room.Tyray Pearson put on a perfect 4-4 shooting performance in the first half to total eight points while guards Kantrail Horton and Jamaal Tinsley dished out 6 and 5 assists respectively.Texas Tech scored five straight points to open the second half and cut the Cyclone lead in half to 44-39 with 17:50 remaining. That would be as close as the visitors would get, however, as Iowa State went on a 19-4 run and upped their lead to 63-43 on a Tinsley steal and layin with 9:49 to go in the game. The Red Raiders cut Iowa State’s lead down to 69-56 on a jumper from Andre Emmett but would never again get any closer. By the time chants of “Skoglund” surfaced in Hilton Coliseum with just under 2:00 to play, Texas Tech had all but packed it in. ISU head coach Larry Eustachy pleased the home crowd of just 12,831 by inserting reserve center Andrew Skoglund into the lineup with :29.4 left in the game.”I was a little surprised [by the chants],” Skoglund said. “But it was kind of cool.”Following the game, however, most of the Iowa State players were not as happy as Skoglund.”Everyone’s going to come out and give their best against us, and we realize that,” Sullivan said. “So we just have to bring our ‘A’ game for a whole game and we just didn’t bring it for forty minutes. I was pretty disappointed.””We played terrible on defense [in the first half], we didn’t execute well and we were playing like we were in slow motion,” Rancik said.Iowa State will get a chance to win the conference title outright this Saturday at Hilton Coliseum when they host Nebraska.
