Ames business evacuates after bomb threat

People at Community Bio-Resources Inc., 1618 Golden Aspen Dr., had to evacuate Wednesday after a bomb threat was made to the building.

Andre Buechner, manager of marketing and corporate communication for Community Bio-Resources, said the bomb threat phone call was made around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Buechner said he didn’t know why a threat would be made to the building, except the caller might have associated the company with the sheep suspected to be infected with mad cow disease and were upset with the testing of the animals. The sheep arrived at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories, 1800 Dayton Ave., Thursday.

“Honestly we don’t know; we don’t have reasons to get any,” Buechner said. “I talked to the manager today, and we thought maybe because of our name, Community Bio-Resources, that the person associated us with the sheep coming to town. Other than that, I don’t know why we got the bomb threat.”

Community Bio-Resources, Inc. is a center for plasma collection, processed into life-saving, plasma-based therapies, according to its Web site, www.cbr-usa.com..

After the bomb threat call was made, Buechner said the building was evacuated, and the Ames police department was called.

Sgt. Mike Johns said no explosive device was found.

“The day shift officers responded to it, they assessed the threat and did a search of the area and the facility,” he said. “They were unable to locate any explosive device.”

Buechner said all employees were notified of the incident but no other bomb threats have ever been made to the company.

Johns said the threat was unusual.

“There is no recent history of it [bomb threats to them],” he said. “It would be an unusual occurrence.”
