Findlay awarded for international work

An ISU professor is being recognized from a society of international scholars after many years of hard work and dedication.Robert Findlay, professor of architecture, has been awarded the Phi Beta Delta Faculty Award for scholarly achievement in international education.Phi Beta Delta is a national organization, founded in 1986, which recognizes the achievements of international students and scholars. It includes 120 chapters nationwide.Findlay said he was nominated for the award with four letters of recommendation from colleagues at Iowa State, and is the only person from the university to receive the award this year.In addition to teaching Findlay has also worked with the Peace Corps and the United States Crisis Corps.Other work sites have included crisis management evaluations in El Salvador and Pukapuka Atoll in the Cook Islands.”I’ve worked with the Peace Corps for about 30 years and that work, in a sense, puts you in situations to see what you can do,” he said. “It tests your effectiveness in another culture, and that aspect is a good confidence builder.”His service in the Peace Corps coupled with his crisis service has induced him to be active the community, Findlay said.”This work in these areas has [been], and is, very meaningful to me,” he said.On top of his work with the Peace Corps, Findlay said he has taken groups of students on foreign study programs in Finland, Mexico, England and Italy. He has also lectured in places such as Beijing, Oxford, Barcelona, Montreal and Berlin.Calvin Lewis, professor and chairman of architecture, said Findlay’s work and love for what he does has created credibility for the department as well as for Iowa State.”I think he is effective at multiple levels, and his work in the community of Iowa and of the world has been outstanding,” he said. “Certainly it is his passion for what he does that he is able to pass along to students.”The Phi Beta Delta Faculty Award includes a $1,000 prize and plaque, and will be presented during the group’s annual conference in Montreal on April 20, which Findlay will attend.
