Nichols right; GSB worthless

Eddie Kusmider

After reading Bryan Nichols’ column in Thursday’s edition of the Daily, I must admit that I am inÿcomplete agreement with his position. Every year around this time, the Daily provides coverage on the upcoming Government of the Student Body election, the candidates and their promises to change the university. I always chuckle to myself about their empty promises to “fight tuition increases,” “get students more involved” and “create more diversity” here on campus. News flash to all candidates! Tell me something I haven’t heard. GSB’s sole purpose is in the area of banking for the disbursement of funds for clubs and other activities. That’s it. And yes, GSB does address and discuss other issues here on campus, but that is the extent of it. Don’t claimÿto fight tuition because there isn’t a damn thingÿyou can do about it. GSB is here for aesthetic purposes only and seems to be more of a requirement than a necessity, when it comes down to Iowa State being compared to other universities. Candidates with the most GSB experience thus farÿwill probably end up being elected because others know of their work ethic and reputation, which will benefit themÿin the long run. I imagine that GSB will be around for years to come,ÿbut for what reasons I’m not sure. But if kids want to spendÿhours debating whether certain articles or amendmentsÿshould end in a period or a semi-colon, thenÿthat’s their problem. I’ve got better things to do. ÿ Eddie Kusmider Graduate student Meat science
