Cyclone Scholars are trying to help students keep their academic life and social activities balanced during college. The organization plans to be more visible this semester through presentations about balancing everyday activities.”In the fall semester we selected scholars. Now that it’s spring we are starting presentations,” said Kari Hensen, coordinator of supplemental instruction. The organization is funded by a professional and scientific grant and is sponsored and coordinated by the Academic Success Center and Student Activities Center, said Amy Hinkhouse, graduate assistant in the Academic Success Center. “This is a peer group, and that is what makes it different from other organizations,” she said. “The presentations facilitate discussion among the students in order to help them balance academic life and non-academic activities.”The scholars program centers around interactive discussion in order to learn about being a better student, said Sharon McGuire, director of the Academic Success Center. Study skills, resources, campus involvement, goal setting and time management are also discussed in the presentations.”We basically want to focus on the pure balance between academics and out-of-class activities,” Hensen said.Hinkhouse, graduate student in educational leadership and policy studies, said Cyclone Scholars is an undergraduate student organization. “This is a new program marketed towards student orientations and clubs, and the presentations are designed for 10 to 30 or 40 people,” McGuire said.Hensen said presentations are given to dorm floors, fraternities and sororities or any other interested groups. In order to schedule an appointment, call 294-6624 at least one week in advance, Hinkhouse said. There is no charge for the presentation.
