Residence Hall Week kicks off Saturday

Residence Hall Week begins Saturday, filled with a variety of activities and events to keep students having fun.

Res-Hall-A-Palooza will include activities such as a semi-formal dance and ExTRAvaganza, a fireworks show and battle of the bands. Events are sponsored by the Inter-Residence Hall Association, Richardson Court Association, Union Drive Association and Towers Residence Association.

Paul Duncan, IRHA president, said a committee of 15 people from all three associations worked the past two months coordinating all events and activities.

“The committee brainstorms for about a week with ideas for new activities that we want to try and activities and traditions that we’ve done in the past,” he said.

IRHA Director of Special Events Pat Blair said ExTRAvaganza should be a highlight to the week because of the carnival and fireworks at the end of the night.

“We’ve focused really hard on trying to advertise this so people will know what’s going on,” he said.

Committee members plan popular events from previous years with new activities and events which will work well in the future, Blair said.

“The planning has been exciting trying to get people together this semester and get things put together,” he said.

Getting people involved and having pride in the residence halls are some of the main goals of Residence Hall Week, Duncan said.

“It’s a chance for everyone to get out and have fun, hopefully enjoy the nice spring weather and get involved with some activities,” Blair said.

IRHA Vice President Steve Skutnik said that in the past student turnout hasn’t been what residence hall officials have wanted, but he expects it to turn around this year.

“What I personally would like for people to get out of Residence Hall Week is not only to gain a sense of pride in their residence hall communities, but also gain an awareness of the governments that exist therein to improve residence hall life – IRHA and the association governments,” he said.

Duncan said his main goal for Residence Hall Week is to get as many people out to all the events.

“I would really like to encourage people to go to these events, not just in their own association, but within the others too,” he said.
