The Cyclone baseball team started its season at Capp Timm field with a 5-3 victory over intrastate rival Iowa Tuesday.

Shortstop Adam Christ drove in two runs and third baseman Rob Conway went 3 for 3 to spark the Cyclone attack.

Right-hander Alan Bomer picked up the win by notching five strikeouts in his two innings, moving his record to 2-3.

Senior Mark Hanrahan picked up his first save of the season for the Cyclones shutting down the Hawkeyes in the final inning and two-thirds.

Iowa State started the scoring off in the bottom of the second inning when Christ tripled, driving in two runs.

Left fielder Matt Nordby followed with a single down the third base line, scoring Christ. Rob Conway roped a single that scored Nordby pushing the lead to 4-0.

The Hawkeyes cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth on a run-scoring-single by Brad Carlson and a double by Alex Dvorsky. Bomer ended the rally by striking out Andy Jansen to end the inning.

Iowa scored again in the top of the eighth on a lead-off home run by Ian Mattiace to deep left-center field off Iowa State’s Joe Bell

The Cyclones went to the bullpen for left-hander Alex Donnelly.

Donnelly got Brad Carlson to pop out to right field. Hanrahan came in and struck out back to back Hawkeyes to end the inning.

The Cyclones matched the Hawkeyes in the bottom of the eighth on back-to-back doubles by right fielder Brandon Cashman and first baseman Brent Koen.

The threat ended with a strikeout and fly-out to right field, stranding Cashman at second base.

Hanrahan finished the Hawkeyes off in the top of the ninth by getting Brian Bucklin to fly out. Hanrahan then struck out John Cappellano and got Kurt Vitense to ground out to second base, ending the game.

The win pushes Iowa State’s record to 7-12-1 while the University of Iowa falls to 8-7.

“We get up a little more for Iowa, especially the in-state guys,” Hanrahan said. “We try and get the out of state guys to realize how important it is to us.”

Iowa State’s has had two home series cancelled because of weather.

Head Coach Lyle Smith recognizes the importance of getting games in despite the chilly weather and the significance of the win over the Hawkeyes.

“It’s big because its a home game and there is added pressure because some fans want to see the Cyclones win and some want to see the Hawkeyes win.,” Smith said. “Whatever the case might be, it is a good rivalry that we can hopefully start to expand.”

“As far as the weather goes, it presents a challenge, but we have to get over that and get ready to play,” he said. “It’s nice to play here, as rough as it is and as bad as the grass has been because of the winter kill, it’s still your house.

“We have played so many games on the road and lost some real tough games, its nice to get the last at-bat where the pressure isn’t on defending and the pressure is on the visitors.”

The Cyclones face Grandview College Wednesday at Capp Timm field. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
