IRHA approves online voting
March 9, 2001
The Inter-Residence Hall Association passed bills which will enable residence hall students to vote online for the upcoming election.
Parliament members voted unanimously to allow voting to go online, and also voted 16-0-2 to update the election code.
Andy Walling, Richardson Court Association president, said IRHA should follow the Government of the Student Body’s example for online voting.
“We have to vote online,” he said. “I can’t even believe how many people turned out [for GSB]. We have to go this way.”
IRHA will allocate $690 from the discretionary account to pay for the system, which will receive and tabulate the votes for the Apr. 3 election.
Also, parliament members passed a bill 17-0-2 which will give $500 from the IRHA discretionary account to the Knapp Hall President’s Council in support of the hall’s Veishea balloon. “Last year we had one in the parade,” said Tim Steines, Knapp Hall representative and co-author. “We are trying to keep the tradition alive. We’ll have a 30 ft. Odie balloon, and it will be something to look forward to.”
Walling said he supported the bill because it will help increase participation from the residence halls in the student-led celebration.
“I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again – I love Veishea, let’s get this done,” he said.
David Breutzmann, Towers Residence Association program chairman, announced at the meeting there will be a date auction on Apr. 2 during Residence Hall Week.
“There will be six people auctioned off – three men and three women – preferably from each association,” he said. “Those auctioned off will receive a $20 gift certificate, probably from Hickory Park.”
He also said money proceeds from the auction will benefit a local charity yet to be determined.
