Knapp Hall hosted a movie awards ceremony Thursday evening in the Knapp/Storms Commons for six floors that participated in creating their own movies. More than 200 students in the Towers community and a panel of six judges viewed the movies. The judges were Dr. Thomas Hill, vice president of Student Affairs; Brian Tenclinger; assistant dean of students; Jen Phillips; resident assistant in Storms Hall; Shashawna Mea, RA in Storms; and Reid Lander, student security officer.Knapp hall director Ben Chamberlain said he was impressed with the turnout and the participation of the floors for creating their own movies. “I’m glad to see the participation we had in general,” he said. “I was really amazed with what the presidents of each floor did with creating fliers, banners and posters.”The evening started off with music videos on a big screen with surround-sound, followed by a slide show of the Knapp Hall students.”There’s a lot of excitement tonight,” said Kevin Simpson, freshman in pre-architecture. “You can feel the electricity in the atmosphere.” Michelle Miller, RA on third floor Knapp, worked with RAs from each floor to get the ideas together for making the movies. “I think the participation was awesome,” said Miller, junior in horticulture. “It was a lot of fun”The first movie shown was created by the girls of first floor Knapp. Their film included walking around their floor asking girls to participate in making the movie. It ended with a scene in a room, dancing in the dark. The second movie, created by the girls from second floor Knapp, contained a group synchronized dance session. With their own rendition of “Survivor,” third floor Knapp had to face crises of attacking an “animal” for food, dealing with a team member eating beef jerky and putting makeup on a partner while blindfolded. The movie ended with a team member being voted off.Suzanne Galluzzi, freshman in advertising and a resident on third floor, said she “had a lot of fun.” The guys of fourth floor Knapp created their movie scene in the bathroom. With half the guys in the bathroom, it was discovered that there were two people in one shower stall. Fifth floor Knapp had their own creation of “COPS,” but with two student security officers breaking up fights on the floor and discovering evil hackers in the den.”Food Service, Parking Issues, Elevator Gremlins,” the movie shown by the guys of sixth floor Knapp, keyed in on a day of school for two very different students. They deal with a car getting towed, an elevator going haywire and the right to smoke.Between the showing of the movies, there were drawings for study bucks and a competition to see which floor could make the most noise. The loudest house received a free night of bowing at the Memorial Union. The movie award for best comedy went to fourth floor for their bathroom scene and an award for most original movie went to sixth floor for their film on “a day in the life” of two students.Kevin Simpson, resident on fourth floor, said he was excited to win for best comedy”There are a lot of kids on my floor that are natural hams and creative,” he said. “We’re very happy to have won.””It’s been a lot of fun doing this and with it being the first year,” Chamberlain said, “I hope to make it an annual event.”
