Student in jail after drug bust

More than 500 hits of LSD were found in an ISU student’s apartment Friday after an ongoing investigation by the Central Iowa Drug Task Force.

Joshua Peters, junior in mechanical engineering, was arrested for possession of controlled substances and seven charges were filed against him, said John Tinker, manager of the Central Iowa Drug Task Force.

Story County officials said Peters is still at the Story County Jail being held on $85,000 bond.

Peters was charged with possession of LSD – d-lysergic acid diethylamide – with intent to deliver, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, tax stamp violation for LSD, tax stamp violation for marijuana, manufacturing marijuana, prohibited acts and school zone enhancement, said Tinker, captain of the Department of Public Safety.

Tinker said the school zone enhancement charge was filed because Peters was too close to Crawford Elementary School.

He said the Task Force has been investigating Peters’ activities for awhile.

“We’ve been investigating him for some time, and we executed a search warrant Friday afternoon,” Tinker said. “When he returned to his apartment, we made the seizures.”

He said more than 500 hits of LSD were found along with marijuana in Peters’ apartment, 410 Welch Ave. #4.

“We found 540 hits of LSD,” Tinker said, “and he was growing marijuana in his apartment. He had some marijuana bagged up in the apartment also.”

Sgt. Mike Johns said the police departments are aware of many drugs problems in the area, but there isn’t an increase in the area.

“Drugs don’t necessarily run in cycles. Drug cases normally take a considerable amount of investigation,” he said. “We’re aware of the activities going on. It’s not like we have an influx.”

Tinker said Peters was probably a reason for many of the drugs in the area.

“I think he was a major distributor from the information that we have on him, especially of LSD,” he said. “I’m sure he had a number of people he was supplying them to.”
